There’s something sacred about reading. It’s not just about flipping pages or ticking off a TBR list, it’s about slowing down, disconnecting from the noise, and entering a world that exists just for you. And like any meaningful ritual, reading deserves a bit of intention. Add the fact that the cozy season is fast approaching, it’s time to once again prepare to hunker down in our homes.
Whether you’re just getting back into reading or you’re a lifelong bookworm looking to elevate your experience, creating a reading ritual and a space of your own can transform the way you disconnect from the noisy world around you, and connect with books sitting on your shelf (or in my case, various portions of the floor in front of the shelf).
So, take a deep breath, look around your space, and let’s talk about how to make it different.
📚 What do you need from your reading ritual?
Reading can happen anywhere, on the subway, in bed, between meetings. But a reading ritual is about being deliberate. It’s saying: This is time I’ve carved out for myself.
Ask yourself:
- When do I feel most receptive to reading? Morning? Before bed? On weekend afternoons?
- How much time can I realistically give myself without guilt or distraction?
- What’s my goal: To learn? To unwind? To feel?
To be clear, a “grand reason” isn’t necessary either, it can simply be that you want to spend some time reading. But, understanding if it’s out of boredom, a need to escape from the ‘real world’ for a few moments, or something to bring you joy is always a plus. It can set the tone for what, where, when and how you find yourself picking up a book.
As an example, if I want comfort because things are stressful, I’m far more likely to pick up a well-loved story with characters that are familiar. A few of my go to favorites The Diamond Throne by David Eddings, The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman, anything and everything Sherlock Holmes, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I know these characters and their worlds, so falling into them is like curling up in a comfy blanket. No surprises, just calm.
If I want to escape, I might pick up a book I’ve read before, but it’s more likely that I’ll go on a genre binge like romantasy or a good mystery/fantasy book. The genre sets the familiar tone, but I get to meet new characters, new worlds, and I get to let those characters have the problems for a few minutes while I’m just along for the ride.
🛋 Become the Designer of Your Dream Space
I’m a Pinterest fan. I have scores of boards and wish lists. But the reality, I rarely translate those boards into real life. Nor do you need a Pinterest-perfect, influencer approved, reading nook (though if you have one… way to go!). All you need is a place where your body can relax, your mind can focus, and your spirit can take a few deep, much needed, breaths.
Some ideas:
- A favorite chair
- A floor cushion with a cozy blanket
- A corner of your bed with good lighting
- A spot on the porch or under a tree when the weather’s right
Add simple, sensory comforts:
- A soft throw
- A warm drink
- A candle or diffuser with a scent you love
- A small side table for your book and cup
Your ultimate goal for designing your space? Make it feel like a personal sanctuary. One of the keys in designing your space is to figure out how the little rituals fit together. What repeatable habits do you need to signal your brain that it’s time to slow down?
Readers the world over share their ideas online, but a couple that seem to crop up over and over again:

- Making a cup of tea or coffee before sitting down
- Playing instrumental music or ambient sounds (think rain, crackling fire, soft jazz)
- Journaling a few thoughts before or after a reading session
- Lighting a candle or incense as you open your book
- Setting a timer to help you stay present (and off your phone)
I am a huge fan of ambience music myself. Not going to lie, I was 100% influenced by the mini projectors that were all over social media a few months back. Purchased one, and I love it!! I have a curated list of various ambience/visual videos on Youtube. Beaches looking out over a seascape and pirate ship, crackling fireplaces, Jurassic Park dinosaurs, LOTR Hobbit holes, Disney lo-fi piano, Castle windows with dragons flying outside….
I love making myself a drink and plate of snacks, turning on a calming video, and settling into my comfy blanket in my favorite sitting spot to read. I’ve recently moved, and it was one of the first spots that was set up from the beginning. Even when the rest of the apartment was a disaster with boxes strewn everywhere, that chair was the calm in the chaos every single time.
📖 Choose the Right Book for the Moment
Reading rituals work best when the book matches your mood. This is where understanding your goal comes in handy.
Don’t force yourself through something heavy when your heart wants something light. If you have trouble choosing what to read in the moment, try grabbing a few choices:
- One comfort read
- One in your favorite genre
- One thought-provoking book
- One wild card you picked up on impulse
Then, take a break and step away from them for a few minutes. Make your cup of tea, light the candle, put on some music. Once you’ve set your space up to read, then go back to your books and let your intuition guide you. The perfect book, in the right setting, feels like magic.
✨ Protect the Time
This is often the hardest part as life loves to interrupt. To really craft a reading ritual, one of the things you need to allow for yourself is permission to take back some of your time. For yourself, not for anyone else around you. Try:
- Putting your phone on Do Not Disturb
- Letting people around you know “this is my reading time”
- Scheduling it in your calendar like you would a meeting or workout
- Allowing yourself grace if you skip a day or two

A ritual doesn’t have to be daily to be meaningful. It just has to be yours.
I have a social job where I interact with a lot of people all day long. It can be taxing, and impacts my health in various ways depending on what’s also going on in my personal life.
That move I just mentioned… My life was in various boxes, in a myriad of unpacking stages. Everything was a mess, and work happened to be extremely stressful for me at the time. My mental and emotional health took a massive hit in addition to my physical health. Having my comfort space, even on days where I didn’t pick up a book, was incredibly helpful. It signaled my brain that I was home, and everything was quiet, and it was okay to slow down.
In a world that moves fast, choosing to deliberately and intentionally slow down is a quiet act of rebellion. It says:
I deserve rest.
I deserve imagination.
I deserve stories that stretch my soul.
And in carving out this space, you’re not just reading a book, you’re tending to yourself first.
So, what’s your reading ritual?
